VeRIf: Verification of Reference Intervals

VeRIf is an interactive Shiny web application for the verification and evaluation of reference intervals based on routine laboratory data using the R package reflimR. The web application supports medical laboratories in efficiently, transparently, and data-driven reviewing existing reference intervals.

VeRIf enables the structured evaluation of numerical laboratory values with the following core functionalities:

  • Verification of predefined target reference limits using routine laboratory data

  • Indirect estimation of reference intervals using reflimR

  • Complementary indirect estimation of reference intervals using refineR

  • Analysis of routine laboratory data using mclust

  • Graphical and tabular evaluations (histograms, density curves, Q–Q plots, and tables)

  • Traffic-light system for clear and intuitive plausibility assessment

  • Optional filtering by age and sex

The combination of statistical modeling and visual presentation allows for a rapid assessment of the agreement between routine laboratory data and existing reference intervals.

VeRIf can be tested directly in the browser without local installation:

VeRIf is an open-source project. The complete source code is available on GitHub and can be freely used, adapted, and further developed:

We are currently evaluating the demand for a commercial version offering extended functionality, improved usability, higher quality standards, and professional support.

To better assess this, we are looking for users who are interested in testing the current version. Participants in the testing phase will have the opportunity to actively contribute to further development through their feedback.

If you are interested to participate as a tester, we would be pleased to hear from you.
